Go on-board as John McGuinness escapes with inch-perfect Macau GP lap
Go on-board with Horst Saiger as he threads through the Macau GP Guia Circuit attempting to keep up with TT legend John McGuinness
We’ve run a few articles in the last week proclaiming the sheer insanity that is the Macau GP (in a good way) yet this exhilarating new on-board video from Horst Saiger showing John McGuinness up ahead still just takes our breath away.
Experienced road racing specialist Saiger has become something of a YouTube favourite thanks to the frequency with which he posts on-boards with his GoPro (other brands are available…) and takes the viewer right to the heart of the adrenaline-rushing action.
On this occasion we get to see Saiger – riding a Yamaha R1 – go tailing the Paul Bird Motorsport Ducati of McGuinness around the Guia Circuit street venue in an attempt to learn his reference points.
It’s no mean feat, McGuinness threading his Ducati Panigale V4 R through the walled turns with inch-perfect accuracy, while the TT legend also has the benefit of that superior top speed to call upon when he can get the hammer downm.
Saiger to his credit is also very neat, while the sensation of watching this video is certainly heightened by the singing big bang Yamaha engine and the blip of the gearbox.
In short, watch this, volume up and marvel at these masters of a very hard trade…
Alas for McGuinness, the 2019 Macau GP was something of a bust after his machine develop a technical issue as he pulled off on the warm-up lap from third on the grid, meaning he couldn’t make the later restart.
Saiger fared better, finishing seventh, albeit only after the result was classified just one lap into a restart before another red flag meant the race was abandoned with Michael Rutter the controversial winner.
