Peter Hickman set a searing pace in first qualifying for the 2019 Macau GP to comfortably lead his Bathams team-mate Michael Rutter on the BMW around the streets of the Asian city.

Winner in three of his last four visits to Macau, Hickman was straight on form during first free practice and maintained that performance through to Q1 to complete a best lap of 2m 25.100.

Wary of the frequent red flag periods that disrupt sessions, Hickman’s best effort on the Bathams BMW came on his first flyer which held firm throughout to put a full 1.7secs between himself and Michael Rutter on the sister Bathams-backed Honda RC213V.

Riding the Ducati Panigale V4 R that took Scott Redding to BSB title glory, John McGuinness was fourth fastest – but two seconds slower than Hickman – while his Tak Chun Group by PBM team-mate David Johnson was a small margin back in fourth.

Horst Saiger was the best of the Saiger Racing Yamaha contingent in fifth, ahead of Burrows Suzuki’s Derek Shiels, Lee Johnston on the Ashcourt BMW and Davey Todd’s MGM by Penz13 BMW.

One more qualifying session is to come to formally decide the starting positions for Saturday’s race.
