KTM’s financial troubles are having far-reaching effects on the brand’s portfolio and profile, and the latest casualty of the crisis seems to be MV Agusta.

It’s not been officially confirmed by either party at the time of writing, but multiple sources are reporting that MV Agusta has been effectively cut free by KTM, pointing to the Austrian brand relinquishing its stake in the boujee Italian marque. If true, the news comes just nine months after KTM acquired a 50.1 per cent stake in the Varase-based brand.

From a financial perspective, the move makes total sense, with KTM putting itself into a so-called ‘self-administration’ early this year, seemingly needing to get its ducks in a row. It also makes sense as the acquisition of MV never seemed like a comfortable fit with the rest of the Pierer Mobility Group’s (PMG) brands.

Multiple outlets, including Motorrad, RideApart and GP-One, are citing the Italian trade union CISL, which apparently met with KTM officials who are claimed to have said MV is no longer a “strategically important asset”. Adding weight to the theory that MV has indeed been released from PMG are claims that Agostino Casati, from the Italian union CISL, has said “KTM is completely withdrawing from MV Agusta,” going on to say that “MV Agusta must stand on its own two feet again in the future”.

KTM UK refused to comment when asked about the potential dropping of MV. Should the news be true we’d expect an official statement in the coming days.
