NEARLY all motorcyclists will have heard of a 'life-saver'. It's the name given to that glance over the shoulder that we're taught to take just before changing direction.

This rider, in Zhaotong, China, nearly found out why it's called what it is. 

CCTV footage shows what happened when the rider turned across the path of a lorry, apparently without performing the check that was drummed into us as learners.
