Is MotoGP’s next Pedro Acosta Already in the Premier Class?

2024 was the year of Pedro Acosta in some ways, but could a 2025 rookie be the next to steal the limelight?

Pedro Acosta did not win a race as a MotoGP rookie last season, but the noise around the Spaniard was deafening thanks to his consistently great performances which nearly led to him finishing as the top KTM rider. However, there’s another Spaniard who could be in store to achieve similar results as a rookie this season.

Acosta bagged himself a pole position at Motegi and several podium finishes in 2024, a year where Ducati won 19 out of 20 Grand Prix, so that alone shows how impressive Acosta was.

It’s clear that he is a generational talent, in fact, we knew that before he even arrived in MotoGP, after the factory KTM rider won the Moto3 title as a rookie and the Moto2 championship in his second year in the class.

But another rider who is slightly younger than Acosta has also had the spotlight thrust upon him due to his talent, results and mature head on young shoulders. That rider is Fermin Aldeguer.

Aldeguer was the pre-season favourite for the Moto2 title last season, but despite a few dominant showings, unfortunate circumstances or individual mistakes cost him dearly. As a result, Aldeguer failed to win the title like Acosta did the previous season, however, it didn’t stop the Spaniard from being promoted to MotoGP.

Acosta made the KTM more competitive than it ought to be last season, but one of the reasons we believe Aldeguer could be in store to achieve something similar as a rookie, is the fact his talent, which is immense, has been paired with last year’s title-winning Ducati Desmosedici GP24.

Unquestionably the manufacturer to beat again in 2025, Ducati holds all the cards going into this year as it still has the most bikes on the grid (six), and a youthful but experienced Gresini line-up as Aldeguer will partner Alex Marquez.

Aldeguer will have the chance to pick Marquez’s brain, with the latter going into his third year riding a Ducati, while also having the data of Francesco Bagnaia and eight-time world champion Marc Marquez to mull over.

But outside of Aldeguer is there another rider that is showing potential like that of Acosta? The answer to that would be yes and it's not the reigning Moto2 champion Ai Ogura who has also stepped up to MotoGP in 2025.

Instead, it’s Moto3 world champion David Alonso, who in 2024 became the first Columbian Grand Prix champion and in 2025 will move up to Moto2. Alonso has previously trained with Marc Marquez and has been aided in his development by the now-factory Ducati rider. And in 2025 Alonso will have the chance to make a real statement by winning the title as a rookie, something Acosta failed to achieve in 2023.

Alonso, like Acosta and Aldeguer appears to be a very special talent, I mean, after all, he dominated Moto3 last season which is typically a class that’s impossible to consistently win in, let alone pull away from big groups of riders during races, something he also managed to do on a number of occasions.

Whether it’s Aldeguer in MotoGP and Alonso in Moto2, both riders look destined to reach the type of heights that we’ve seen from Acosta, who himself will be expecting a mega 2025 MotoGP campaign following his own rookie season which was one of the best since Marc Marquez’ in 2013.
