ISLE of Man TT legend John McGuinness is to compete in a round of the British Rallycross Championship alongside multiple-Olympic champion, and big-league petrolhead, Sir Chris hoy.
Isle of Man TT 2019 - John McGuinness Interview
McGuinness and Hoy will be taking to the dirt and Tarmac with a Liam Doran Citroen C4 Supercar, which is claimed to produce around 600bhp and is capable of reach 60mph in under two seconds. McG’ got his first taste of Rallycross power at a pre-season test last week at the Lydden Hill circuit in Kent – while it wasn’t the road racer’s first taste of the course, having raced there in the lower two-wheeled classes, it’s certain that experiencing it in a fire-breathing Rallycross car was a whole different ball game.
Speaking to Autosport, McGuinness seemed buoyed by his first test and spoke about how life in the exposed world of motorcycle racing might give him an edge in the confines of a car.
He said, “I'm massively excited, I've not got a lot of experience on four wheels but wasn't a million miles off the pace in Gordon Sheddon's BTCC car [John tried his hand in the BTCC machine in 2016]. I had a spin in that - I really enjoyed it.
“Trying my hand at British Rallycross is a good opportunity so I grabbed it by the horns. I'll be able to be brave - I'll feel invincible with a roof! I'm excited for the new challenge. 'Do it while you can' I say.”
John McGuinness will be taking part in the Knockhill round on the 26/27 September, while Chris Hoy will participate in Lydden Hill on the 30/31 August.
