An EV will be lining up on the World Superbike grid next season, as the Subaru Solterra is named as the official safety car for the 2025 World Championship.

The deal runs until 2027 and will mean four battery-powered Solterras following the series as it threads around the world. During these rounds, the Subaru and its team of operators will lap the circuit immediately before the start of every session, assessing the track conditions and ensuring that the marshall posts are staffed as they should be. The safety car also plays a key role in understanding changing weather conditions, and how these can affect the grip of the circuit and the safety.

The new EVs will also have a separate hospitality unit situated at every round, allowing fans and the media to experience Subaru’s first full EV for themselves thanks to hot laps and test drives.

Speaking about the announcement, Francesco Valentino, Head of WorldSBK Commercial & Marketing Department said:

“We are thrilled to welcome Subaru as the Official Safety Car partner for WorldSBK. The Solterra embodies a perfect blend of innovation, performance, and reliability, making it an ideal match for our Championship. Subaru’s focus on delivering high-quality vehicles aligns perfectly with WorldSBK’s pursuit of excellence. This partnership highlights once more the value of the Championship as a global marketing platform.”

The Solterra is an all-electric SUV, which starts at £52,495 in the UK and is powered by two motors (front and rear) boasting 77bhp and 124lb ft each. The 71.4kWh battery is claimed to provide up to 289 miles of range and it can be recharged from 20 to 80 per cent in a stated 30 minutes on the fastest chargers.
