Yamaha has taken another step towards achieving complete carbon neutrality by 2050 with the addition of 2,437 solar panels at its plants across Europe.

Yamaha Motor Europe (YME) completed the installation of the panels at its factory in Saint-Quentin, France, at its R&D facility, and its Yamaha Motor Italia branch, in Lesmo, Italy.

This initiative is part of the company’s wider commitment to reducing emissions and employing clean energy sources throughout its facilities, a plan shared by Japanese rival Honda, which is also aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

A total of 2,437 solar panels have been installed, occupying a total of 18,000 square metres. The solar panel system is expected to generate 996 kilowatt-hours of power and a production of 1,115 megawatt-hours of power per year.

The solar panels will allow YMME to save 10 per cent of the total electricity needs of its facilities, allowing it to avoid the emission of 60 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) on an annual basis.

YMRE, together with Yamaha Italy’s office, which is situated in the same location, now features 792 solar arrays that are claimed to cover a total area of 2,045 square metres and produce 467,920 kilowatt-hours of power yearly.

The new installation will allow a 38 per cent energy saving for YMRE and 28 per cent for YMIT, leading to both saving 248 tons of CO2 annually. The electricity generated by the photovoltaic systems will be used directly to power all electrical systems within these facilities.

Clément Villet, Land Mobility Director at YME, said: “We are thrilled to integrate this clean, renewable source of power in our facilities, taking a step towards a greener future. Not only does the installation of solar panels align with Yamaha Motor’s environmental goals, but also ensures a more cost-effective and reliable energy source for our factory, R&D centre and offices.

“As a company trusted by society, at Yamaha we drive our activities with concern for the environment and the communities we are at, and we are focused on minimising the environmental loads of our operations. We have developed a sustainable strategy in Europe following the global Yamaha direction, and are making continuous efforts to make sustainability an integral part of our business processes and work environment. The solar panels that we install in our facilities in Europe will be instrumental in helping our company to accomplish its global goal of achieving carbon neutrality at all plants by 2050.”
