Chinese manufacturer WK has announced its latest offering, the WK MXI 125 it’s oddly dubbing as a ‘Maxi’ scooter

THE latest bike from WK is a small bike with lofty ambitions, as the firm’s new WK MXI 125 is being heralded as a 125cc ‘Maxi’ scooter.

Now, popular convention normally reserves the term maxi scooter to be tagged to larger capacity models, like the Yamaha TMAX we rode earlier this year. Indeed, glancing down the spec sheet for the new machine, we’re struggling a bit to put our finger on the maxi element of the bike – aside from the name, of course!

As the name suggests, the MXI is a 125cc, water-cooled, fuel-injected engine, four-stroke engine. It makes a claimed 11.5hp, which in fairness isn’t bad compared to some of the competition. It’s also graced with an 11-litre fuels tank meaning you could easily commute a short distance each week without worrying the reserve light.

Stopping power is provided by a combined braking system (CBS), and suspension comes in the form of telescopic forks and oil-filled twin shocks. Keeping everything nice and manageable, while out on the road or moving the bike around the garage, is a low 128kg kerb weight and 745mm seat height.

Styling-wise, you have to say that WK has done a decent job of the bike. It’s modern, and sleek looking, and despite featuring more than just a dollop of inspiration from some other bikes in the sector, still looks original enough to not be deemed a cop cat. The matt paint finish goes a long way to giving this machine a clean and nicely finished look. Basically, it’s getting muted nods of approval from around the office.

I suppose the biggest draw with any of these small capacity scoots with Chinese origins is the price, and the MXI 125 comes in at an economical £2,599+OTR charges. That does put the bike significantly below the OTR price of one of the best sellers in the market, the Yamaha NMAX. It also means the WK comes in at nearly half the cost of Honda’s premium Forza 125 released last year.
