YAMAHA has unveiled the new MT-25 in Indonesia and revealed it will eventually go on sale around the world, as predicted by Visordown.

The new naked 250 is the latest in the MT range, that extends from the 125cc MT-125 all the way to the 847cc MT-09. It's based on the fully-faired R25, itself identical in all but capacity to the 321cc R3 that we get over here.

The official unveiling confirms the authenticity of a leaked picture of the MT-25 revealed by Visordown last month.

Designed to rival bikes like Kawasaki’s Z300, it’s the latest in a string of small-capacity machines to hit the market over the last few years. At 165kg it’s fairly light, while the power should be around 35bhp.

At the moment it’s not clear if we’ll get the 250cc version that’s been launched in Indonesia or if Yamaha will make a 321cc MT-03 variant derived from the R3 that’s already sold here.

At 46 million Rupiah in Indonesia, the new bike’s price over there is a mere £2250. You can bank on it being significantly more as and when a European version appears.

Here’s Yamaha’s full press release:

'IWATA, June 8, 2015 – Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd (Tokyo: 7272) announced today that the new 'MT-25' sports model from the 'MT' series, featuring a 250cc liquid-cooled in-line two-cylinder engine, will go on sale in Indonesia from June 2015. Manufacturing and sales of the new model will be carried out by Yamaha Motor's group company, PT. Yamaha Indonesia Motor Manufacturing (YIMM).

The 'MT-25' brings the sporty feeling that is enjoyed in the everyday speed ranges of the 'MT-09' and 'MT-07' (launched principally in developed markets last year) and the character of the 'MT' series to the 250cc class. Moreover, through its development based on the platform (including engine, frame etc.) of the 'YZF-R25', which has already won high praise in the ASEAN and developed markets, it delivers both superior handling and cost-performance.

The development concept is the 'street cheetah', which can nimbly cut through the urban jungle and take the lead in the traffic flow.

Its main features include:

1) Riding position suited to agile yet comfortable city riding

2) Design that expresses the 'mass forward silhouette' and feeling of mass centralization shared across the 'MT' series

3) Two-cylinder engine that brings a sense of elation to mid- and high-speed range

4) Lightweight 165kg body design that contributes to nimble handling

In recent years, the popularity of sports models has continued to increase in Indonesia, and last year Yamaha Motor launched new products such as the 'YZF-R15' and 'YZF-R25' designed for those who love the road racing scene. Along with these high-value-added models, the new 'MT-25' will contribute to further heightening the sporting image of the Yamaha brand, and expanding Yamaha Motor's sales throughout the overall market.

Moreover, as a global model charged with 'expanding business scale', the future launch of the 'MT-25' is planned for many countries around the world, including developed markets.'
