Marquez takes Kenny Roberts' record
...is there any stopping this 'rookie'?
MARC Marquez won his fifth MotoGP race at the Brno circuit on Sunday beating Kenny Roberts’ record of four race victories during a rookie season in 1978.
The 20-year-old has now won four races in a row along with his first premier class win at the second race in the calendar with reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo only winning three races out of the eleven contested so far.
The Spaniard also became the first rider since Valentino Rossi to win four or more successive races in MotoGP which was back in 2008 when the Doctor was 29-years-old making Marquez the youngest rider ever to have done this.
After the race, Marquez said: “Before we came here I didn't expect to win, because Jorge and Valentino had both tested at Brno recently and Dani is always so fast here and won the race last year.
“It is a completely different track from those at which we have raced before, and these 25 points feel different to Indianapolis.”
He also added: “This was a very hard fought win and I enjoyed myself a lot. The battle with Jorge was really good and we are pleased with the victory. Thanks to all the team.”
Marc Marquez is now 26 points ahead of his team-mate Dani Pedrosa, therefore even if Pedrosa wins at Silverstone and Marquez doesn't finish, he will still head to Misano leading the World Championship.
