Shocking video footage showing the moments leading up to a serious crash on the Isle of Wight has been released, with the Crown Prosecution Service hoping the video will urge others to slow down.

The crash occurred on the Isle of Wight’s Military Road, a stretch of asphalt that was supposed to play a leading role in the now-defunct Isle of Wight Diamond Races. It’s a beautiful stretch of road, but with carparks and laybys hidden in the long grass to the left, it’s also not a piece of road to be taken lightly.

That’s the mistake Samuel Callaway made, as in August last year he sped along the Military Road at speeds exceeding 110mph. Harrowing GoPro footage, captured by Callaway himself, shows the moment that his Honda CB750 Hornet sped past Hanover Point car, just as a black Toyota Aygo pulled out onto the main road. Unable to react in time, Callaway slammed into the car, breaking 24 bones and requiring him to be airlifted to the Southampton Major Trauma Centre.

As a result of the crash, Callaway has been left with longstanding health problems, including him reportedly being unable to use his hand properly, leaving him unable to ride a motorcycle or drive a car. Magistrates handed Callaway a 6-month driving ban and fined him £120. He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £48 surcharge.

The Crown Prosecution Service released the crash footage as a reminder that slowing down when approaching car parks and laybys could be a lifesaver. It’s also hoped that as the riding season begins, and the weather gets warmer, all drivers and riders can show some restraint and consideration out on the roads.
