VR46’s Di Giannantonio Injured in MotoGP Test
Making his comeback following a recent shoulder injury, Ducati’s Fabio Di Giannantonio has been ruled out of the Sepang MotoGP test after suffering a fractured collarbone
Fabio Di Giannantonio’s return to MotoGP action has been shelved after he suffered a fractured collarbone on the opening day of testing at Sepang.
The Italian, who dislocated his shoulder during the 2024 season, underwent surgery a few months later which saw him miss the final two rounds of the championship. His return to action ended in further disappointment when he crashed his Ducati on day one of the test, which was topped by Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo.
While the three-day Shakedown test produced very few crashes or injuries, the opening day of official testing was particularly dramatic as Di Giannantonio was one of several riders to crash. He was also not the only rider to suffer a big injury as a result, as reigning world champion Jorge Martin was reportedly transported to the trackside medical centre and then hospital after a huge highside.
Martin suffered injuries that will see him miss the remainder of the test after fracturing his right hand and left foot.
As a result of his collarbone fracture, Di Giannantonio will be flown back to Italy this evening ahead of another surgery before the 2025 season where he will be using full factory machinery alongside Ducati’s official riders Francesco Bagnaia and Marc Marquez.
After initially being reported as “OK” by the VR46 team, a statement was later made saying: “Fabio Di Giannantonio has been diagnosed with a left collarbone fracture following his Turn 5 crash at Sepang Test. The Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team rider will fly back tonight to Italy to undergo surgery.”
The crash and subsequent fracture is the worst possible start Di Giannantonio could have made to his 2025 season, as the Italian will now be playing catch-up against the likes of Bagnaia and Marquez.
On his first appearance of 2025 for Ducati, Marquez made a strong start as he finished second fastest while Bagnaia was only 17th. Alongside Di Giannantonio and Martin, Raul Fernandez also suffered a crash on day-one as he too will miss the remainder of the test.
