PBM Ducati rider Glenn Irwin saw his British Superbike title hopes suffer another blow at Thruxton when he was launched from his Panigale V4 R in devastating fashion during race two. Last season’s championship winner is now 47 points away from top spot, currently held by former team-mate Tommy Bridewell.

Surprisingly, Irwin managed to battle through his injuries in race three to finish 15th. However, it was clear that the massive accident took a lot out of the Ducati rider. Looking at the images of his bruising, it won’t take a rocket scientist to figure out just how big Irwin’s crash was. The Northern Irishman could do very little to save the high-side, which saw him land in the middle of the circuit between oncoming bikes.

“[The crash] made the final race 50/50 but I felt okay so gave it a go,” said last season’s championship runner-up after race three. “And although I was annoyed to lose a couple of places towards the end, we got some points. We’re 47 points adrift of the lead but I’m not too concerned. There are plenty of races to come and plenty of points, all at good tracks for us so we’ll go again.”

Despite lining up for race three, Irwin initially appeared to be in more trouble injury-wise. The immediate impact of Irwin’s fall resulted in him being stranded in the middle of the circuit along with his Panigale V4 R, thus leading to a Safety Car stoppage before the race resumed without the 34-year-old.

Like at Brands Hatch, round seven of the championship was dominated by Yamaha with Kyle Ryde winning race one before team-mate Ryan Vickers, who won both races at Brands and is now the most in-form rider thanks to his four wins out of the last five, produced a Sunday double for the OMG GRILLA Yamaha Racing team.
