India exported a record 2.8 million motorcycles in the 2017-2018 financial year, a 20 per cent year-on-year growth.

Eighty-eight per cent of the exports were motorcycles with a scooters making up 11 per cent (seven per cent year on year) or 314,307 units.  The rest were probably chickens with wheels nailed to them.

The sales have been driven by Hero and Honda's India arm, according to industry spokesman Subrata Ray. He also said the growth in exports was primarily on account of geography additions over the years and enhancing market share in these geographies.

“Players such as Hero MotoCorp and Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) have taken to motorcycle exports in recent years. And they added to the volumes,” he added.

Honda alone accounts for three out of every five scooters exported from India. Led by Dio, India’s number one exported model, Honda’s exports grew by 17 per cent which is more than double the seven per cent growth of scooter exports.
