Jerez Circuit Postpones Superbike Race, Provides Update on MotoGP
Despite a Spanish Superbike race postponed until April, assurances have been given that the MotoGP race at the end of April will go ahead at Jerez
After severe flooding hit the Jerez circuit in the last two weeks, work to repair the damage began without any races expected to be moved, including the upcoming MotoGP round at the end of April.
And assurances have been given that the MotoGP event will go ahead as planned, despite a Spanish Superbike round being postponed.
Scheduled to take place on the 22-23 March, the superbike round has been moved to the first weekend of April as part of the circuit has been affected by the floods, causing structural damage.
The areas most affected include turns seven, eight and 11, which are covered in mud, water and gravel. Asphalt was also damaged at the final corner - turn 13, which was named after five-time MotoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo.
But in a statement about the circuit and scheduled events to come, Mayor of Jerez, María José García-Pelayo, said: “We know that in certain corners there has been damage to the asphalt, but not to the track. What we have been able to verify are defects in the outer area of the curves, as well as inside some buildings.
"Action is being taken as quickly as possible in the circuit and in the different rural neighbourhoods and in Nuevas Jarilla. A major cleaning has to be done because, once the water has been removed, a lot of mud has remained."
Specifically speaking about the upcoming MotoGP round, he added: “For the peace of mind of the fans, the Jerez Circuit guarantees that these works that are being undertaken guarantee that the Spanish Grand Prix will be held as scheduled. The Circuito de Jerez-Ángel Nieto has already put all the human and material resources at its disposal to resume the activity as soon as possible.”
