LAST July Triumph made waves in the off-road racing world by lining its class-leading middleweight adventure bike on the start line of the tough Baja de Aragon Rally.

It’s become a bit of a theme for companies to do this, although few have put their road bike on the start line and done quite as well as Triumph did. With world enduro champion Ivan Cervantes behind the bars, the Tiger 900 Rally Pro took the win in the newly formed Trail category, sealing Triumph’s place as a name to watch in the off-road sector.

To pay tribute to the feat, Triumph is reported to be bringing a new special edition version of the Tiger 900 Rally and GT models to the market in form of a Baja de Aragon special edition.

We don’t have much in the way of hard and fast specs for the machine, as the news comes from patent filings registered down under. As is the way with these types of filings, there aren’t any specs, pictures of the bike, or descriptions of what it looks like. But Triumph does have form for this kind of thing. When the original Tiger 900 Rally was launched, it wore a paint scheme inspired by the Tiger 800 XC Tramontana that Felipe Lopez rode in the Pan Africa Rally way back in 2017.

That bike was special for a number of reasons, first up, it was an out-and-out racer, built for just a couple of reasons. The first reason was to compete in the event – box ticked. The second reason was to begin looking further ahead at what the Tiger range could end up looking like. When the Tiger 900 Rally Pro appeared in 2020, it was no surprise to see its hottest off-road version wearing a Tramontana-inspired paint scheme.

We expect more of the same from Triumph with the new Baja de Aragon Edition, in that it could well be wearing a special edition paint job, aping the bike which Cervantes so valiantly rode to a class victory.

A snazzy paint scheme is all well and good, but punters tend to want a little bit more bling than just that, and the patent filings point to some extra parts being added. The quoted weight for the special edition model is quoted at 3kg more than the stock Rally and 2kg more than the GT. What those parts could be is anyone’s guess, although a fruity exhaust, crash protection, new levers and footpegs are my best guess.

For anything more concrete than this though, we’ll just have to wait and see, and we don’t actually know if, or when, the model will be getting its official unveiling. We’ll be keeping an eye on the Visordown inbox and will bring you all the official news as soon as we have it.
