Police Release Shocking Video Showing Wire Trap on Popular Trail

The wire traps have been set up on a popular riding trail in the USA and seem to have been done deliberately to catch motorcyclists

Lunatics seem to be trying to cause harm to motorcyclists again in the United States, as so-called wire traps have been found on a popular trail near the town of Telluride, Colorado.

The video, released by the San Miguel County Sheriff, shows a rider making their way along a trail in very low light conditions. It’s not quite clear if it is totally dark at the time of filming, or if the headlight of the bike is making the camera footage seem a little darker than it actually is. Either way, the rider is treading their way along a single-track trail, which is reported to be the Wilson Mesa trail. After passing through a small gate, the rider then approaches two trees which have thick heavy-duty wire strung between them, seemingly at neck height.

The picture above is from a wire trap found on a UK trail in 2018 - again, it was a popular route for motorcyclists

Luckily for the rider, they spot the danger and seem to have enough distance to slow to a stop before investigating the wire further. That said, on the video at least the wire is very difficult to see, and you could easily imagine a situation where someone is not able to see the wire trap at all should they be riding just a small amount faster than the rider in the video.

It’s important to note that the alleged trail the rider was using is open to a number of different users, from hikers and runners to horseback riders and mountain bikers. Importantly, it’s also open to motorcycles from 1 July to Labour Day - which this year falls on 2 September. With the video from the Sheriff's department being shared on 12 July, we can only assume the video was filmed after 1 July, and therefore that the rider was using the trail legitimately.

The incident isn’t an isolated one. Wire traps have been found on this side of the Atlantic, too, with a trail in Worksop being targetted in 2018 which we also reported on here at Visordown. More recently, anti-biker idiots in Europe have poured oils and cooking fat on the hairpin bends of popular riding roads.
