Dainese has unveiled an all-new Smart Airbag vest that features level two protection and can last up to 12 hours on a single charge.

The latest protection piece from the Italian brand is designed for both road and what Dainese calls “light off-road riders” - therefore probably best to avoid wearing it if you’re taking part in enduro or motocross – and it features Dainese’s D-Air system, which has been developed over more than three decades and consists of sensors that can detect a potential accident.

It comes with a protector that’s capable of automatically detecting dangerous situations and activating in the space of a few milliseconds.

The heart of the D-Air system is its shield, and the airbag has been built with patented microfilament technology. This system provides a consistent distance of 50mm to be maintained between the walls of the bag.

Dainese claims the vest’s airbag can absorb more than seven times more energy than traditional hardshell protective gear.

This is all underpinned by an algorithm that benefits from more than 30 years of research, as well as millions of miles on the road. The D-Air electronic control unit can detect and analyse the data from the sensors 1,000 times per second, which allows it to activate the system only in cases of real need.

The Smart Air’s strong points are claimed to be its triple-activation airbag, which doesn’t need replacing, as well as the gas generator which can easily be replaced completely independently.

The vest includes level two protection certification on the chest and back and features a rechargeable battery that can last up to 12 hours following a full charge. The new airbag will be available later this month for £599 and can be reserved as we speak.
