Jonathan Rea topped the first day of free practice running around the Navarra Circuit in Spainas the WorldSBK Championship riders became acclimatised to the all-new venue.

Making its debut on the WorldSBK calendar this year, though some riders have already tested around the Basque circuit ahead of the weekend, it was still a chance to see which riders were in best shape for what promises to be a crucial weekend for the title contenders.

As it happens, the top three at the end of the day are exactly as they are placed in the overall standings with Rea's top time from the morning not being surpassed by Toprak Razgatliolu, despite the Turk going quickest in the warmer afternoon sessions.

Fresh from the announcement he will join BMW next season, Ducati's Scott Redding was third fastest, the top three split by just over a tenth of a second.

In fourth, Garrett Gerloff was among the front-runners but blotted his copybook with an off at Turn 4, the American ahead of Yamaha counterpart Andrea Locatelli and Chaz Davies, the Welshman showing strong form as he continues he slow trail back from a shoulder injury sustained back at Misano.

Michael Ruben Rinaldi was seventh fastest with Alvaro Bautista - heavily rumoured to be swapping Honda for a return to Ducati next season - eighth, while Tom Sykes led the BMW challenge in ninth and Alex Lowes was tenth.

Elsewhere, the first Suzuki to enter a WorldSBK event in three years was 20th of 22 in the hands of Naimichi Uramoto.
