In preparation for the 2025 Moto2 season, Triumph developed a completely new engine which has had the biggest update since it became the Exclusive Engine Supplier for Moto2 in 2019, and in doing so, the British marquee has produced its first full race gearbox.

The key change that’s taken place is the introduction of a new gearshift pattern where neutral is now positioned at the top of the gear ratio and locked out, which prevents riders from shifting through neutral during races.

This 2025 design features a new selector drum with revised tracks and as a result gear engagement has been improved. The billet-machined components provide better mass and inertia, while the mechanical neutral lockout means riders can shift between 1st and 6th gear for the first time ever.

Thanks to the new design, neutral can only be engaged manually, which is specific to pitlane and start-line use. The gearbox is housed in a newly developed crankcase built specifically for the 2025 Moto2 engine.

Carlos Ezpeleta, Chief Sporting Officer, Dorna Sports: “Triumph have been breaking records in Moto2 since they arrived, so for us it’s even more impressive that they continue to keep pushing to innovate. This new gearbox update speaks to their commitment to Moto2 and the opportunities the MotoGP paddock offers to provide a racing laboratory for partners to take their cutting edge technology to the racetrack. We’re sure the riders will be big fans of this update and that will translate into even better racing.”

The British manufacturer first came onboard as a Moto2 engine supplier in 2019 and with the success it has had, it was then no surprise that Dorna and Triumph recently agreed upon a new deal that keeps Triumph in that role until the end of 2029.

The new Triumph engines will make their second appearance of 2025 at this weekend’s Argentina Moto2 round.
