What Does Tyre Giants Michelin Make of Pirelli’s MotoGP Takeover
Michelin will lose its place as the official tyre supplier for MotoGP and MotoE at the end of 2026, instead replaced by Italian giants Pirelli, but what does it make of the situation?

Tyre manufacturer Michelin has been the official rubber supplier for MotoGP since 2016, but that will change in 2027 after being moved to one side for Pirelli. But the French brand has provided clear reasons as to why it could not continue beyond the current regulations.
Pirelli has its fingers firmly placed in most of the top level championships around the world, including Formula 1, WorldSBK, Moto2 and Moto3, while it’s also the favoured compound amongst off-road racers in the MXGP championship.
MotoGP has been the most prestigious series currently missing from its stable, although that will change in line with the new regulations in 2027 which include smaller 850cc engines, a ban on holeshot and ride-height devices and 100 per cent sustainable fuel being used.
As well as taking over the reins as the tyre supplier for MotoGP, Pirelli will also take hold of MotoE meaning Michelin’s presence as a tyre supplier in the biggest global championships will be non-existent.
But what does the tyre company make of it all?
Well, Michelin’s head of motorsport has spoken for the first time since the news broke and claimed the decision to combine all championships with the same tyre compound was not in its interest.
Piero Taramasso said: “After several months of discussion regarding the extension of Michelin’s MotoGP contract after the 2026 season, Dorna Sports has decided to select a sole tyre supplier for all classes. So, this means MotoGP, Moto2, Moto3, MotoE and also the series like Rookies Cup and Talent Cup.
“Unfortunately this set-up was not an option for Michelin, which has always prioritised the MotoGP and the MotoE. MotoGP represents the pinnacle of motorcycle racing and it serves to us as a measured testing ground for all technological innovation. It’s the platform where Michelin develops the expertise, it gets a lot of data, it sets records in collaboration with the manufacturers and the best riders in the world. We respect Dorna’s position and remain focused on our role as the tyre supplier for the seasons 2025 and 2026 for MotoE and MotoGP. We will continue to work hand in hand with our partners.”
