A Southampton man has been jailed for 48 months for ramming a police motorcyclist from their motorcycle as they took part in a pursuit.

The driver of the stolen Honda, Marvin Geddes, was attempting to evade officers when he was confronted by motorcycle-mounted PC Derek Hearn on Lords Hill Centre East, in Southampton. After already driving in a dangerous manner, Geddes had run red lights, and driven on the wrong side of the road and the wrong way at roundabouts, the assailant used the stolen Honda Civic as a weapon, driving at PC Hearn at speed.

The collision took place at a section of road with calming measures in place, and on seeing Geddes approaching, PC Hearn stops his bike to the left of the road. Geddes then proceeded to ram the rider, going on to flee the scene and collide with another vehicle just a short time later. After this second collision, Geddes abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.

Speaking about the incident, PC Hearn said:

“I feel lucky that I haven’t lost a limb or even my life from this incident. As a police officer, I pride myself on doing my job to the best of my ability to safeguard the public. I do not accept that my life should be put in danger because of that.”

Superintendent Mark Lewis said:

"This is a stark reminder of the dangers our officers sometimes face while simply doing their jobs. I was absolutely appalled when I saw the footage of this incident. No police officer should ever have to deal with such extreme violence towards them.

"The fact PC Hearn and the driver of the Peugeot were not seriously injured is extremely lucky, considering the severe level of complete disregard Geddes showed to them."

Geddes was handed a 48-month sentence on Friday January 10 at Southampton Crown Court, after previously pleading guilty to attempting to cause actual bodily harm, dangerous driving and driving without a licence and driving without insurance.
